8,500m2
Ireland
2014
The Department of Education & Skills identified the need for seven post-primary schools and one primary school to be developed on seven sites as part of the PPP Schools Bundle works. One of the projects was the Athlone Community College in County Westmeath which required 8,500m2 of a new building and associated external facilities to be constructed to accommodate 1000 pupils. The new post-primary school replaced the existing school and the construction works used a phased demolition to facilitate the new educational building.
The project included the new construction of a general teaching accommodation, specialist classrooms/workshops, physical education hall and ancillary areas, hard play courts, playing pitches, parking spaces, engineering services and associated site development works. Decanting of the authority equipment was also required from the existing school building.
Axiseng collaborated with the Architects to create a design that reflected a clear and strong structure underpinning the form and character of the building that relates to the surrounding environment.
The completed lively and welcoming school provides a suitable place for intellectual, creative, physical and social activity. The new addition to the local area creates an atmosphere and image that reflects the importance of the school in the community.
