Located in the small enclave of Belfield just outside of Dublin City Centre, the University College Dublin is a 3rd Level National College Institute established over 160 years ago. With over 32,000 student enrolment at the university and the lack of accommodation within Dublin, there was an apparent need for affordable student residence close to the institution.
The project consisted of several phases of the uplift of an existing aging residential building. The design included the refurbishment works to the mechanical and electrical installations in Blocks 2-20 and the replacement of equipment with code issues such as the water tanks and emergency lighting within the facilities to comply with current standards.
Axiseng designed the services within the building as to limit the amount of builder’s work required by reusing existing materials effectively while improving the finishes to a modern standard and to code, thus providing for a significant cost savings in the overall project.
The security was increased by providing exterior CCTV and the door control (Salto) was networked as to indicate the use of student cards at each door. Additional refurbishment included all of the outside lighting as well as the installation of exterior power for the student enrolment marques.
As a result of the significant transformation, the overall project delivered a higher quality and more secure standard of accommodation for students who wish to live and study on campus.
